RUGBY

Ellis Park and rugby are synonymous. The only time when rugby was not played at Ellis Park was during 1980 and 1981 when the new stadium was under construction. Ellis Park saw the first International match against the All Blacks in 1928 thus making ellis Park Internationally well known. Crowds of between 38 000 and a record crowd of 100 000 against the British Lions (in 1955) attended the matches.

Also very popular for cricket before the Wanderer Stadium was built, Ellis Park was the site of many cricket match after an agreement was reached between TRFU and The Transvaal Cricket Union. In March 1979 the cricket moved to the Wanderers while Ellis Park was being redone and has been played there ever since.

Today the Golden Lions Rugby Union (Transvaal Rugby Union before) and Ellis Park Stadium (Pty) Ltd are debt free and have cash resources of more than all the other Unions and SARFU combined as well as borrowing powers of a similar amount.

In 1995 rugby fever hit the country with South Africa's hosting of the Rugby World Cup, the biggest event on the rugby calendar. Ellis Park was the venue for the World Cup Final which was played on 24 June 1995. In this spectacular final, New Zealand and South Africa ran onto the field at 14:45 to a thunderous roar of 62 000 spectators and millions of spectators glued in front of their TV's. South Africa won this game 15-12 after extra time was allowed.

SOCCER/FOOTBALL

Ellis Park is also home to Orlando Pirates, one of South Africa's premier Football teams.
As one of the hosts to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, we will be seeing semi-final matches at Ellis Park, possible because of a multi million rand investmant towards the upgrading of the stadium. The upgrades will give an additional 10 000 seats making a total of 70 000 seats, and multi tiered stands above the goal posts.
